Zoos, in general, are establishments where animals are kept in captivity and cared for by humans. Most people, when they imagine a zoo, think of the traditional types of animals housed. There are other zoos, however, that specialize in a specific kind of animal. Sometimes animal sanctuaries are classed as zoos. However, in many cases, these sanctuaries are not open for general viewing by the public.
Back to the Sea Touch Tank Hut
This is located in Nova Scotia and really is not a traditional zoo. It is just a hut that specializes in housing small marine life. What can be found here are crab and starfish, along with only miniature sea creatures. It truly is a learning center that offers the public visitors a lot of information about what is found here.
Maritime Reptile Zoo
As can be guessed by the name, this is a zoo specializing in taking care of reptiles. This is an ideal location to visit for those intrigued by reptiles of all different species and sizes.
Dragonfly Haven Therapeutic Farm
This is really a hands-on type of mini zoo. Visitors get to interact with the animals here as most are docile in nature. This is a wonderful experience for both kids, adults and animals, and the creatures get lots of love.
Wildlife Rescue Centers
While these are not traditional zoos, they do fit the definition of what a zoo is. They keep animals in captivity; however, not for the general purposes that a traditional zoo does. Their primary goal is to rescue wildlife that would be in danger without any human intervention. For example, injured animals or a wild animal abandoned by its mother will not survive without help.
There are several of these types of centers and sanctuaries throughout Atlantic Canada and other provinces as well.
