Events and News Zoos

With zoos being so popular throughout Canada, there is often news and events that are taking place. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of the zoos had to be temporarily closed. Some ran into difficulties, which made the news. Others became innovative as to what they could do to keep their zoos available to the public somehow.

One of the events that took place at the Toronto Zoo was the innovative way they could allow limited access for visitors. What they did was open the zoo for drive-through visits. This particular zoo has very large walking paths that allow for the use of vehicles. While people will have to remain in their cars, they can still enjoy a wonderful zoo experience.

A Little Bit of Sadness

Unfortunately, there are times when some of the zoo animals do not survive. They either pass away from health complications or old age. At the Toronto Zoo, a red panda gave birth to two healthy cubs, much to the excitement of zoo officials and visitors. Unfortunately, one of the pandas did not survive. It was suspected that the mother could not produce enough milk for two. Every effort was put into trying to feed the cub that passed away, but it was unsuccessful.

Then, there is a smaller zoo outside of the Toronto area, in Peterborough, where they experienced losing one of their elderly bobcats in March.

Much of the budget that zoos survive on comes from the public fees for entry and purchases they make. As a result of the pandemic, this has gravely affected the budget. Some zoos are appealing to the public for financial help to feed the animals.

Christmas for the Zoo Animals

As hard as this pandemic has been on everyone, the zookeepers worldwide have stepped up to fulfil their duties as best as possible. This included making Christmas extra special for the animals they are responsible for.

For example, in Sydney at the Taronga Zoo, the animals got some extra special treats. It was the same at the Toronto Zoo in Canada. Treats included foods that they usually can only have a little of. They were served in Christmas wrapping. Truly a happy event during tough times.
