Canada actually has some strict rules when it comes to keeping any animal in captivity. These regulations apply to any zoos that will house them as well. Most provinces have an animal protection group that will act as a watchdog for any type of creature kept in captivity. The private ownership of many exotic animals is usually prohibited.
The Difference Between Exotic and Wild Animals
For Canada, wild animals refer to those who are indigenous to this country. Exotic animals are still wild animals but have been brought in from other countries. The Magnetic Hill Zoo in Atlantic Canada has several different types of exotic animals that include:
* African Lion: These lions in their natural habitat are now mostly found in the wild in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there are endangered species in Western India. This is an animal that has been classed as vulnerable.
* Barbary Sheep: This is an animal that makes its home in the rocky regions in North Africa.
* Black Vulture: This is a bird that comes from the US down to Peru. It is also found in Central Chile along with Uruguay.
* Siberian Tiger: Found in the far east of Russia and the North-East part of China. Also, it is suspected that it inhabits part of North Korea.
* Eland: Sometimes referred to as the Eland Antelope. Its natural home can be found in the Southern and Eastern parts of Africa.
These are just a few examples of the types of exotic animals that can be found at the Magnetic Hill Zoo. Here they are well looked after and kept in large enclosures that mimic their natural habitat.
